Jack O' Lanterns, Thanksgiving Events, Trivia Night, Polar Express Train, Gingerbread House Competition, and More: New England Fall Events Top Picks for Nov 3rd-8th, 2016

Once Halloween is in the books for the year, the fall event schedule begins to narrow as folks turn their attention towards Thanksgiving. We're never happy to see our beloved harvest events fall festivals draw to a close!

We've pulled together a list of some worthwhile activities and events for this weekend and we hope you will enjoy them.

Thank you all for your support of New England Fall Events all season long! We were proud to increase our fall event listings this year to include 1800 individual New England events on our schedule over 32% more than last year!

Our local farms, museums, theatres, community centers, seasonal businesses, and local attractions keep raising the bar each season and we continue to be impressed by the variety of ways to celebrate our favorite time of year.
Thank you to New England's small farms and festival organizers enough for welcoming New England Fall Events and sharing their bounty with us. We have baked your apples into pies, snacked on your cinnamon doughnuts, carved your pumpkins, laughed on your hayrides, gotten turned around in your corn mazes, sipped your mulled cider, and created a lifetime of memories at your farms and festivals. What a wealth of local bounty we have in our little corner of the country!

Two Noteworthy Winter Holiday Events...in November!
Before we sign off for the season, we'd like to tip our cap to two special upcoming events that have a winter holiday theme but take place in November.
Boston Christmas Festival handmade crafts puppets chickens

The first comes up this weekend--the Annual Boston Christmas Festival and Gingerbread House Competition held at the Boston Seaport World Trade Center Friday through Sunday November 4th-6th. Sure, families are welcome but this shopping extravaganza is intended for adults as it's a very popular, well-attended, annual shopping tradition for many New Englanders. We attended for the first time last year and were impressed by the variety of booths, crafts, makers, goodies, and more that were offered. If you are looking for unique gifts or to check off your holiday shopping early in the season, you will want to make a beeline to this festival.
Boston Christmas Festival Gingerbread House Competition_New England Fall Events

Even more delightful was the impressive Gingerbread House Competition which auctions off these eye-popping gingerbread displays to fundraise for Housing Families, an important local organization supporting families in transition.
We wrote a soup-to-nuts article about our experience at this festival which will give you a complete overview of the experience, offer strategies for getting the most from the event, family tips, and even super affordable parking alternatives! Read "Gingerbread Houses and Holiday Shopping at the Boston Christmas Festival."

The Polar Express Train Ride is one of the most beloved family traditions in the area and RI's Blackstone Valley is host to the only Polar Express Train in New England this year!
The Polar Express Train Ride Woonsocket RI_New England Fall Events

With dates starting in November and running from November 18th through December 23rd, you will want to book tickets ASAP as this special event sells out every year. We had a memorable visit last year and continue to appreciate the professionalism, thoughtfulness, and sweet details that this event producer delivers with every event they put on (see our coverage from the American Girl Train Ride for more).
With holiday songs, games, entertainment, a personal visit from a certain bearded someone, picture opportunities with said bearded guy (skip the mall!) and a special Polar Express themed gift, this is a special way for families to celebrate the season with their kiddos.

As we like to do, we have a complete article chronicling our Polar Express Train Ride experience and to answer your questions, help you plan ahead, and give you a full idea of what fun the train ride has in store for you. Read "A Magical Ride to the North Pole on the Polar Express Train."

New England Fall Events_Leaf Jumping Piles Kids Fall Foliage
As we head arrive mid-month, it's a fantastic time for fall events while the weather is nice and the New England foliage a feast for the eyes. There is no better time for a day-trip to explore a different area of your state or a neighboring one! Nothing makes us happier than a wandering road through picturesque areas of Connecticut or Vermont in search of an off-the-beaten path fall festival.Take back roads, not the highway, and soak up the fall color while you can.

As always, New England Fall Events has a number of events this weekend to give you just the excuse to hit the road!

New England Apple Season - Varieties Galore!
No matter which orchard you choose, there are so many varieties to choose from right now. The pickings are great at apple orchards large and small. Visit our sister site for all your Local Costume and Halloween Stores
If you are working on getting your family's costumes together for Halloween, please remember to visit our companion website Halloween New England has a complete list of locally-owned costume stores as well as a number of pop-up seasonal stores.

Many costume stores are small-business owners who have been serving your community for years by providing costumes for every occasion beyond Halloween. It's easy to overlook that that a number of costume stores aren't just for Halloween--people require costumes for school plays, seasonal fairs, meet-and-greets, princess parties, holiday parties, and many other special occasions. The locally-owners, year-round stores understand the full range of quality, durability, budget and more so they are worth seeking out for costumes that are unusual, special, or will last.
Locally-owned costume stores may even offer costume rentals which is a nice perk which you are unlikely to see offered with pop up and seasonal-only Halloween stores.
Here are your state-by-state Costume and Halloween store guides for ConnecticutMaine,

Pumpkin Patches are Popping Up Everywhere!
The color orange is such a feast for the eyes and we can't get enough see our beloved color everywhere and anywhere we go at this time of year!
Visit your local pumpkin patch where you can pick up your squash of choice, color, and shape. We make it easy to support your local small farms with PYO Pumpkins.

Providence's Jack O'Lantern Spectacular is Open 7 Nights a Week until Nov 6th!
The Jack O'Lantern Spectacular at The Roger Williams Park and Zoo is a sight to behold! With thousands of carved pumpkins to feast your eyes on, there are 32 nights total to check out this event, Better yet, it is open nightly which means there are many options to swing down to Providence to see it first-hand. The 2016 presentation titled “American Treasures,” will celebrate our nation’s history and culture through the rich lens of commemorative postage stamps. Since the Postal Service began in the 1850s, commemorative stamps represent key events, places and cultural icons in thousands of extraordinary works of art. Visitors to the Spectacular will experience these images in special scenery where they are transformed into intricate carvings on illuminated pumpkins. Event details.

Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns comes to Boston at the end of the month - FOUR Nights Only!!
While we're talking pumpkins, this Halloween season marks the debut of a huge new Jack O'Lantern event in Boston called Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns. This much-anticipated event will feature over 5,000 carved jack o'lanterns on display and four carving stations to observe the skills from these master pumpkin carvers. You'll find combination displays, giant pumpkins, 3D sculpted pumpkins, and a mini carving factory. Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns will only be open for FOUR nights over the weekend leading to Halloween (Thurs Oct 27th - Sunday 30th) so we recommend buying tickets early as this will most certainly sell out. Find links to sign up for discount ticket codes on our Rise event page.

The Wallingford Scarecrow Festival is coming up this weekend!
One of our favorite annual October events returns this weekend! This Saturday, October 15th is the date for the Wallingford CT Scarecrow Festival --a super family-friendly festival which is free of charge to attend.

New England Fall Events_Wallingford Scarecrow Festival CT_Make Your Own Scarecrow If you attend the Wallingford Scarecrow Festival, give yourself enough time to visit the Make-Your-Own-Scarecrow station where for only $10 you are given access to everything you need--a scarecrow stake, milk jug "head", endless clothes and accessories to make your scarecrow special and unique (all included!). It delighted us to return home with our own scarecrow to stand guard on our yard for the duration of the fall. In addition to the scarecrows, you'll find food trucks, vendors, hayrides, pumpkin patch, pumpkin and fall-themed games, crafts, moon bounce and much more. As is common, most "extras" like games and crafts do cost a few dollars extra but are kept affordable and every dime contributed towards their fundraiser.

Pumpkin Fests, Corn Mazes, PYO Apples, Fairies, Hobbits, Giant Puppets, Cornhole Tourney, Oktoberfests and More: New England Fall Events Top Picks for Oct 5-11

When New England Fall Events takes a peek at the events calendar and we see all the delicious, quirky, memorable, and traditional events and festivals lined up, we know all this local outdoor goodness is just what our site was truly made for!

Peak PYO Apple Season is Upon Us--Get Picking!!!
It's all apples all the time these days! Apple Festivals, Apple Days, apple pies, applesauce, and apple picking!
Look for McIntosh, Cortland, Macoun and Liberty apples are still hanging around in southern New England while Northern Spy, Golden Delicious, Gala, Pink Beauties, Creston, early-Fuji, Empire, Jonamacs, and Primas are the show-offs right now.

If you're curious about "antique" apples you might check out Smolak Farms' antique apple orchard or pop by Old Sturbridge Village this weekend for their Apple Days Festival which offers heirloom apple tastings and you can try your hand apple picking in their orchard with a long "fruit picker" for fun!

As always, New England Fall Events has your complete guides, features, maps, and contact details for your local or destination-area New England PYO apple orchards. Here are your quick links to our apple picking guides: ConnecticutMaineMassachusettsNew HampshireRhode Island, and Vermont.

Pumpkins are Everywhere - Find a Local Pumpkin Patch!

Fun in the Pumpkin Patch
Everywhere you turn you will see piles of gorgeous pumpkins of every size, shape, and personality! What better sign of fall is there?

Your local pumpkin patch is likely to be in full swing too so support your local small farmers by popping by their pumpkin patch to load up on pumpkins for your home, front steps, centerpiece, flower vase, pie, carving, and pumpkins for toasting seeds---shall we go on?

Here are  New England Fall Events' Pumpkin Patch Guides for CTMEMANHRI, and VT.

Corn Mazes are Wonderful Outdoor Fun for Families
New England Fall Events_Wojcik Farms Corn Maze
Wojcik Farm Corn Maze
If you haven't treated yourself to a corn maze yet this fall we ask, what are you waiting for?
We're always surprised by how many New Englanders have never enjoyed a corn maze so if that sounds like you, please don't wait another year to explore one!

Most corn mazes have a different themed design every year and many will incorporate statues, surprises, characters, signs, and props that support that year's theme--imagine coming across the Tin Man while inside a Wizard of Oz theme corn maze. Not only do the goodies or puzzles inside the maze fit the theme but the paths through the giant cornfield will create a picture as seen with a birds-eye view.

New England Fall Events_Escobar Farms Portsmouth RI_ Corn Maze
Escobar Farm Corn Maze Map
You might be given a map to carry with that overhead maze pattern to help you guide your way or you may just wing it as most people seem to enjoy. Some mazes will have puzzles to solve, clues to find, raffles you can enter when you discover hidden boxes within the maze, and more. It's common that there will be a tall bridge somewhere within the maze where you can pause to get a view of the whole maze from a different vantage point and soak up the scenic moment.

Kids and adults alike will have fun and if you call ahead to a farm, you can often get an idea how long it might take to go through. Some, like Sterling, MA Davis MegaMaze could take up to 3 hours to get through whereas local farms like Portsmouth, RI's Escobar Farm has two smaller, adjacent corn mazes so you can complete one and decide if you'd like to re-enter to complete the second (perfect if you have little ones and aren't sure what you're in for).

New England Fall Events_Escobar Farms Corn Maze
Dozens of Corn Mazes in New England
This year RI's Escobar Farm features a "RI ComicCon themed Super Hero" design and Mike's Maze in central MA has a theme called "See America". Riverview Farms in CT has you covered with all kinds of fun at their corn maze including additional farm activities like a petting zoo and an ice cream shop!

Gaines Farm in Vermont hosts a 7-acre "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" design celebrating 50 Years of the Peanuts. With its location just 1.5 miles over the Massachusetts border, Gaines Farm is a snap to get to whether you live in central MA, Connecticut or Vermont. We have a full list of New England Corn Mazes at our website so you can easily search by state.

CT's Pumpkins on the Pier is returns to Milford this Saturday!

Pumpkins on the Pier is one of our favorite family-friendly festivals of the season. Featuring pumpkin displays (some carved, some decorated/painted) local families, small businesses and others contribute to this showcase of our season's iconic squash. The displays are featured all along the Walnut Beach pier so you can walk on the pier over the water to see the dozens of funny and clever pumpkin displays. The pier is well-fenced and you can feel safe walking your children out to see the pumpkin displays.

Back on the beach, away from the water, there are dozens of games, pumpkin carving, pumpkin activities, games, a pumpkin patch costume contests, and more activities under the giant pavilion or on the stage. Read about what you can expect from the Pumpkins on the Pier Festival (plus family tips).

New England Fall Events_Night Fall Hartford_Giant Pullets_Illuminated Puppets
Giant Puppets at Night Fall Hartford
With so much going on over the long weekend we're keeping all our options open to see how we can fit as much in as possible.
We've definitely circled Hartford's Night Fall for this Saturday! We'll be swinging through CT for a few days and nights so we'll see how many day and nighttime events as we can get to!

With Halloween before us we're also getting into the spirit of more nighttime and Halloween-focused events so we'll be checking out local flashlight corn mazes and a couple ghost tours while we can! Our companion website Halloween New England has all your guides to nighttime events, attractions, haunted houses, night hayrides, Salem attractions, costumes, and Halloween fun.

The weekend weather couldn't have been dreamed up any better than we've had in recent weeks! Honestly, Mother Nature has been very very good to us lately and we hope that she will continue to bestow this crisp, cool, sunny weather as long as possible!

New England Fall Events has been taking full advantage of every moment of the season with the many outdoor festivals and events that we've circled on our calendar. We reminded yet again how lucky we are to enjoy celebrate this time of year and how much is right at our fingertips.

More PYO Apples varieties! And (some) Honey Crisps
George Hill Orchards MA New England Fall Events
Apple Picking at George Hill Orchards
Every day brings updates of more apple varieties ready for pick-your-own harvesting. There are a number of farms that have opted out of PYO this year and even a few farms that didn't have any luck with their apple crop. It may take a little extra digging to find exactly which varieties are picking at a given orchard but we have links to contact info for every PYO orchard in New England so don't be afraid to get in touch with them.

Although some New Englanders have been picking the ever popular Honey Crisps this past week, they are nearing the end of that variety soon. The good news is there are PLENTY of other varieties to look for at this time of year!

Look for McIntosh, Cortland, Golden Delicious, Gala, Fuji, Jonagolds to top the list at most places. Some orchards such as Easy Pickins in CT have Macoun, Macs, Cortland and even still have PYO raspberries and (limited) fall blueberries! Kimball Fruit Farm in Pepperell, MA has you covered with apples, mums, pumpkins, donuts and everything else you think of when it turns to fall.

As always, New England Fall Events has your complete guides, features, maps, and contact details for your local or destination-area New England PYO apple orchards. Here are your quick links to our apple picking guides: ConnecticutMaineMassachusettsNew HampshireRhode Island, and Vermont. As picking conditions and crop availability is fluid, always check with the farm before heading out.

Heading out for some fall fun this weekend?
Need help mapping out where to go? New England Fall Events’ state page maps are handy for scrolling and spotting farms near home or near your road-trip destination.
Orchard and fall attraction maps for Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Remember, always call ahead before heading out to PYO as some farms will adjust their hours for weather or they close to allow more time for fruit to ripen.
